The OHS Special Education Department had a fantastic professional development day visiting Pekin High School! Our team observed a variety of classrooms, toured their facilities, and spent quality time connecting with their Special Education coordinators, department chair, social worker, psychologist, and special education teachers. It’s always rewarding to collaborate with fellow educators and get fresh ideas and tools for our students. A huge thank you to the Pekin team for their incredible hospitality and for letting us join in on a great day of learning! 🍎

Unified Foods spent the last week exploring the importance of a healthy start to the day, our students put their skills to the test today by building their very own custom parfaits.
From choosing the perfect yogurt base to layering crunchy grains and fresh fruit, everyone got to be a chef for the morning. It wasn’t just about the food, we learned about:
• Balanced Nutrition: Combining proteins, healthy fats, and fiber.
• Portioning: Learning how to build a meal that keeps us full until lunch.
• Creativity: Making healthy food look (and taste) amazing!
The best part? Seeing all the unique combinations the students came up with. It turns out that healthy eating is a lot of fun when you get to make it your own! 🍇🫐🥜

Last week, ASL Club prepped for the winter storm by learning how to sign about the weather!

Today in Unified Foods, students became kitchen safety detectives! 🔍🍳 They analyzed different “kitchen safety crime scenes” to identify hazards, make inferences about what may have happened, and determine which category of kitchen hazard was involved. This hands-on activity helped build critical thinking and safety awareness as we prepare for cooking. Later this week, students will begin their first lab!

OHS is excited to offer a new class this year called Unified Foods, co-taught by Ms. Kirby and Ms. Pack! This class brings together Olympia Transition Program students and OHS peer buddies to gain hands-on experience in the kitchen while building skills through peer support and collaboration.
Today, students had their first cooking experience, learning how to use a rolling pin and getting expert tips from the pro herself, Ms. Kirby, on how to roll out the perfect circle! 🥧
We are looking forward to a great semester filled with new learning experiences, skill-building, and meaningful connections with our amazing OHS buddies. 🧑🍳🍳🍪
